PolarCap® is intended to reduce exercise-induced elevated brain temperature to prevent or limit long term cognitive impairment after brain trauma.

Each year millions of athletes sustain concussive impacts to the head during sports. The consequences of these impacts often lead to prolonged and in many cases even persistent, chronic symptoms. Repetitive hits to the head can impair central nervous system function that lead to memory dysfunction, learning difficulties, balance disturbance, headache and sleeping problems. It is well known that elevated body temperature in combination with brain trauma leads to higher risk of serious and long-term brain damage as well as poorer cognitive results.

At time of elevated body and thus brain temperature a head impact may lead to an exacerbated brain injury, in comparison if the injury is sustained at normal brain temperature.

Physical activity can elevate the body temperature up to 38.5 - 40°C
During physical activity the brain’s metabolism, i.e. demand for oxygen and glucose, increases and decreases by 6- 10% for each °C change in body temperature

Brain cooling has been shown to reduce many negative consequences involved with brain trauma in combination with elevated brain temperature.

PolarCap® is a portable cooling system, which consists of a portable cooling unit, a patented silicone-based headcap, and a insulating neoprene cover.

It should be used for a minimum of 45 minutes directly after a diagnosed concussion.
